Firewheel Tree Flower - stenocarpus sinuatus
Sydney, Australia February 16, 2004
This flower was on the ground under the tree and has not fully opened.  Most of the flowers are too high on the tree to photograph.  There are new flowers sprouting on the lower branches.  The tree is at least 25 years old, 18 feet tall, in full sun and very poor soil.  It's one of the few trees we planted that survived 11 years of neglect by recalcitrant tenants.  Our house was leased as we lived overseas in USA.  We would never lease a property again.  You really need to be living in the same country as the property to 'keep an eye' on it.

The tree is planted on the nature strip.  The lack of foliage on the left-hand side is due to vines running rampant for years without attention from the tenants.  Sydney is in the grip of a drought right now and water restrictions are in place.  Very difficult to keep everything alive.
2007 April - Water restrictions are still in force.
